For more than 30 years Royal Oak has provided a tree planting program for residents. The program allows residents to purchase from a variety of trees (limit 2 - species vary depending on nursery availability) through the Department of Public Service, please call (248) 246-3300 before the end of January to have a flyer mailed. The form must be filled out, paid and returned by the deadline. Trees are not planted until late April or early May. Trees purchased for the City easement (between the sidewalk and curb) will be planted by a contractor. Trees purchased for private property will be delivered but not planted. Residents can place a marker where they would like the tree(s) planted, however if the contractor does not believe the tree(s) will survive in that location they will plant as close as possible to the area. Trees are not guaranteed, residents are responsible for watering trees.
Residents can also purchase a Memorial tree for a loved one, special event or for any other reason. The City will try to accommodate the location and will provide a wooden block (flush to the ground) for a plaque that the resident must purchase and install. Memorial trees are planted once each year with the tree sale and residents are responsible for watering memorial trees.
It's commitment to tree planting and preservation has earned the City of Royal Oak the National Arbor Day Foundation distinction of "Tree City USA" every year since 1976.
