On March 5th, 2012, Royal Oak officers responded to Holiday Market, located at 1203 S. Main, after receiving several 911 calls reporting a male was in the parking lot wielding a knife and attempting to break the driver’s side window of a vehicle occupied by a 49-year-old male. The driver was able to start his vehicle and move out of harms way without being injured.
Two other customers in the lot witnessed the assault and started yelling at the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect turned his attention to a couple and their infant son who were only two parking spaces away. The suspect began approaching the couple with the knife drawn. As the suspect approached, one of the customers in the lot, a certified CCW license holder, pulled his firearm out and ordered the suspect to drop the knife.
After issuing several commands to drop the knife, the suspect complied and sat on the ground. Royal Oak officers arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect without further incident. Thanks to the quick actions of the citizen, no one was injured.
The suspect is David Harold Shuten, a Madison Heights resident, born 5/8/1968. He was arraigned on 3/7/12 in the 44th District Court before the Honorable Judge Terrence Brennan on two (2) counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and given a $10,000 cash/surety no 10% bond.
Additionally, Shuten had a warrant for Violation of Probation out of the Oakland County Circuit Court for Resisting-Obstructing a Police Officer.
