State Rep Townhall on Senior Taxes

State Representative Jim Townsend (D-Royal Oak) will hold a town hall meeting to inform people about the senior tax on pensions, 401(k)s, IRAs and other forms of retirement income. The tax, which Rep. Townsend voted against, took effect on Jan. 1 and people who receive retirement income have started to see money withheld for this new tax. Tax professionals, including Sheryl Lucas and Denise Dibbs from H&R Block and Jim Reinert of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants will be on-hand to answer questions.

Property Appeals Process Seminar 2012

Maleena Hill Fundraiser

A fundraiser for Maleena Hill will be held on Friday, February 24. Maleena is the daughter of Royal Oak High School Varsity Football Head Coach Jeff Hill. Maleena was born on November 13, 2011 and at 6-weeks old was diagnosed with leukemia and began her treatment the very next day. The fundraiser will be hosted at DeCarlo's Banquet Center from 6:00 pm to midnight. Tickets for the fundraiser are $50.00 per person in advance and $75.00 at the door. The evening will include dinner, a silent auction, and 50/50 raffle with all proceeds going to the Maleena Hill Leukemia Fund.Read more »

Appeal Your Property Taxes Seminar

Youth Assistance Bowl-A-Thon

On Sunday, February 26 is the 30th Annual Royal Oak Youth Assistance Bowl-A-Thon from noon to 4pm at Thunderbird Lanes in Troy. This fundraising event provides funding for a variety of programs including skill building and summer camp scholarships, Mentors PLUS, Family Education and Youth recognition day. ROHA Fundraiser

On Monday, March 5 the Royal Oak Woman's Club will hold its March meeting at its clubhouse at 404 S Pleasant Street at Fourth Street. Lunch will be served at noon followed by a program and meeting beginning at 12:45 PM. Speaking to the group will be Diane Zalecki, RN, Director of the START program of HAVEN in Royal Oak. The START program is a Safe Therapeutic Response Team that provides crisis support and sexual assault examinations to victims of rape. It serves 180 individuals annually.Read more »

Friends of the Library Used Book Sale

Friends of the Royal Oak Public Library is having their annual book sale on Thursday, March 8, through Saturday, March 10, at the Royal Oak Public Library (222 E. Eleven Mile Road). Thousands of used books, dvds, cds, magazines, toys, and sheet music will be for sale in the Friends Auditorium and Youth Activity Room. Proceeds of the sale will benefit library programs and services. Thursday, March 8 is the members-only preview from 5 – 8 pm. Regular sale hours are 10 am - 5 pm on Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10 from 10 am to 3 pm, with a $5.00 bag sale starting at noon.Read more »

Saint Patrick's Day Parade

The Norman O'Brien Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians will host the Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Royal Oak on Saturday, March 10, 2012. The parade is an event to honor and celebrate Irish family traditions to include demonstrating Irish pride and heritage.
