MI Apple Trail Public Art Project Unveils
Come to the Royal Oak Farmers Market to see the giant 4-foot apple designed by local artists for the MI Apple Trail Public Art Project. Twenty farmer's markets were selected to participate in this creative celebration of our great state's apple harvest, the Michigan Apple Commission, the Detroit Eastern Market and SE Michigan's bountiful Farmers Markets.
Mike Byrne, of the Royal Oak Arts Council, said the South Oakland Art Association provided the art talent to get the apple decorated, painted and displayed for the Royal Oak Farmers Market. The twenty apples will compete for votes by Market attendees to win prizes in several categories such as the “People's Choice” award. Awards will be presented at the Eastern Market’s Apple Gala and Auction on October 14, 2011. All the apples will be auctioned off as part of the Apple Gala, with proceeds from each Apple returning to the Farmers Market from which it originated.
Market patrons are encouraged to vote for individual apples along the MI Apple Trail* at participating farmers markets. Self-mailing MI Apple Trail “Passport” postcards have been printed and distributed to each participating Farmers Market to hand out to Market patrons. The Passports list all of the participating Farmers Markets. Individuals will be able to take the passports to each Farmers Market and have it stamped.
