Nature Walks

There is at least one naturalist lead walk per month with additional ones added during the spring wildflower and fall color seasons. An emphasis is put on understanding the different forest types found in our parks. Further information is given on individual plant and animal species, geology and human history of the area. All Nature Walks are free and open to everyone.  Pre-registration is not required.

"Meadow of the Arboretum” nature walk is being held at the Royal Oak Nature Society Arboretum on Wednesday, August 20th, 2014 beginning at 7:30 pm.  Meet at the Royal Oak Senior/Community Center (3500 Marais) parking lot-north end. 

The Royal Oak Nature Society Friends of Fungi, is holding a “Mushroom” nature walk Saturday, August 23rd, 2014 at Tenhave Woods beginning at 10:00 am.  Park at the Marais/Lexington lot & meet at the park entrance.  Mary Fredricks, a member and botanist/mycologist of the Royal Oak Nature Society, will lead the walk. 

"Arboretum in Early Fall” is being held at the Royal Oak Nature Society Arboretum on Sunday, September 21st, 2014 beginning at 2:00 pm.  Meet at the Royal Oak Senior/Community Center (3500 Marais) parking lot-north end.  Take a tour of the meadow in our developing arboretum (behind the community center) and see what fall wild flowers are blooming.

 “Mushroom Walk” is scheduled for Saturday, September 27th, 2014 at Cummingston Park beginning at 10:00 am.  Park & meet at Leafdale & Torquay.  Mary Fredricks, a member and botanist/mycologist of the Royal Oak Nature Society, will lead the walk.  Anyone with an interest in learning more about mushrooms and other fungi of the urban woods is welcome.

"Fall Color” is being held at Cummingston on Saturday, October 4th, 2014 beginning at 10:00 am.  Park and meet at Leafdale & Torquay.  This is the most beautiful time to take a look at our nature study areas.

 "Fall Color” is being held at Tenhave Woods on Sunday, October 19th, 2014 beginning at 2:00 pm.  .  Park at the Lexington & Marais lot & meet at the Lexington entrance.  This is the most beautiful time to take a look at our nature study areas.

"Geological Features” is being held at Tenhave Woods on Saturday, November 8th, 2014 beginning at 10:00 am.  Park at the Lexington & Marais lot & meet at the Lexington entrance..  What did this area look like thousands and millions of years ago?  Why is Royal Oak so flat, or is it?

"Mammals of Tenhave” is being held at Tenhave Woods on Sunday, December 7th, 2014 beginning at 2:00 pm.  Park at the Lexington & Marais lot & meet at the Lexington entrance.  Come and learn about the mammals that live in Tenhave Woods.  We will look for signs of these mammals and have skulls and skins with us to help describe them and how the live.

 "Owl Hoot” is being held at Cummingston Park on Thursday, December 18th, 2014 beginning at 7:30 pm.  Park and meet at Leafdale & Torquay.  We will walk into Cummingston and attempt to lure in or have screech & great horned owls answer tape recordings of their calls.
