The City of Royal Oak offers two beautiful community centers where mature adults aged 50 and better can enjoy opportunities for lifelong education, fitness, nutrition and leisure activities. Supportive services that promote independence and quality of life are available for residents who are 60 and over or permanently disabled.

A.G.E.

Adjacent Generational Exchange (A.G.E.)

Sponsored by a grant from Beaumont Hospital, the A.G.E. program provides assistance to the frail elderly of Royal Oak, utilizing the talents of volunteers.

The Senior Center is always looking to introduce new programs. Do you have a few hours of time to spare each month? Have you recently retired and would like to share you on-the-job experience to help others? Or do you have a skill, a hobby or craft to share? If so, please consider volunteering and enlightening other in our community.

Meal Program

Enjoy meals prepared from scratch in the Mahany-Meininger Center kitchen Monday - Friday, served at 11:45 am. Chef Tim Campbell's old favorites and new creations are nutritious, filling and delicious! Tim's Kitchen is a private-pay, non-subsidized program; pay $3 at the front desk.   • Call (248) 246-3900 at least one day in advance to reserve a meal (call before 1 pm).
  • You may reserve at any time for meals planned during the month.
  • Please call to cancel reservation if you are unable to attend.
  • You may purchase meal vouchers (for 5 or 10 meals) at any time. Great gift idea!
  • Bus fee is waived if you ride the bus to Center for lunch!
  • Menu subject to change based on availability of food supplies.
  • Call if you are going to be late! At times we have people waiting for meals. We reserve the right to give meals to those waiting if registrant is not present (or has not called) by 11:45 am.

R.O.S.E.S.

Royal Oak Senior Essential Services (ROSES)

ROSES is a program providing a variety of supportive services to Royal Oak residents age 60 and over. Payment is made directly to the contracted worker. A $5 registration fee per year is required (Assistance with payment is available to qualifying low-income seniors). The City of Royal Oak sponsors this service. Please call 246-3900 Monday – Friday.

Home Chore - If you reside in Royal Oak, you are eligible to have household tasks such as snow shoveling, yard work, housework and gutters (first level) cleaned for you.

Home Repair – Repairs that do not require a licensed contractor are available to homeowners. Repairs include minor plumbing, carpentry and minor electrical.

Personal Care – Includes assistance with activities of daily living: bathing, feeding, shampoos, dressing and help with ambulating.

Rental

The use of the Mahany-Meininger Senior/Community Center shall be available to non-profit organizations and groups engaged in educational, cultural, civic or charitable activities. Room set-up and takedown is the responsibility of the requesting organization. The Center is not available for private functions, such as birthday parties, wedding receptions, family reunions, etc. See the following information regarding rental policies and fees.

Call dispatch number at 248-246-3914 between the hours of 9:30am and 12:30pm, up to two weeks ahead, to schedule your appointment.

     If handicapped lift is needed, notify the dispatcher.

$2 suggested contribution for each one-way trip.
$3 suggested contribution for each round trip.

Royal Oak Senior/Handicapped

Transportation Program and Eligibility Guidelines

Please read carefully

Transportation is provided by the City of Royal Oak to promote independence for residents who are aged 60 or better and permanently handicapped adults under the age of 60. This service is available Monday through Friday from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm for those traveling within the specified boundaries.

  1. Passengers must complete a registration card listing an emergency contact person, doctor, and other pertinent information.
  2. Vehicles are not available on an emergency basis. Call up to two weeks ahead for appointments. A minimum of one day before is required; however, space is not always available with such short notice. NOTIFY THE DISPATCHER IF HANDICAPPED LIFT IS NEEDED. A maximum of four appointments per week per person are allowed, except shuttles to the Community Centers.
  3. Drivers provide a door-to-door service. They may assist passengers on and off the vehicles if needed. They may escort you from your door to the bus and return. They are not allowed to enter your home or the destination to which you are traveling. Drivers cannot assist wheelchair passengers up and down stairs. PLEASE, do not ask them to do so.
  4. Be ready at your door for pick-up 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Scheduling times are not exact. Drivers may be early or late depending on the driving conditions and the promptness of all passengers.
  5. To take advantage of this service, schedule medical appointments no earlier than 9:30 a.m. Ask your doctor’s office to call 246-3900 for return when your appointment is finished. Appointments must be finished before 3:30 pm to assure time for return trip home by our drivers.
  6. When shopping, remember your pick-up point and be there on time. You are limited to six bags or the equivalent, which the driver may help you with. (NOTE: In apartments, groceries will be left in the lobby area.)
  7. If you are in a wheelchair, a permanently disabled or impaired adult, you may travel independently on our vehicles providing the following criteria is met:
    • You can communicate pick-up times and destinations to the driver.
    • You can walk or maneuver without assistance beyond the ground-level entrances of pick-up and destinations.
    • There is minimal possibility of a medical emergency occurring in transit.

    If you cannot meet the above, an escort or personal care attendant should accompany and assist you. Please inform the dispatcher of special needs or arrangements (such a handicapped lift or escort) when making your appointment.

  8. Permanently disabled adults under the age of 60 may use this service if you submit a letter fromyour physician stating the nature of your disability (addressing the criteria above) and stating whether or not an escort is required to accompany you.

This service is funded and operated by the joint efforts of the City of Royal Oak, SMART Municipal and Community Credit funds, and William Beaumont Hospital.

Passenger contributions are important and imperative to keeping our transportation program operating!
